Re: Support from the Province of Ontario for York South—Weston

Dear Premier Ford,

I am encouraged by your announcement of earlier today regarding opening up more COVID-19 testing across Ontario and in areas that have been identified as "hot spots" for COVID-19. I am writing you today to request support from the Government of Ontario to help address the issue of high numbers of reported COVID-19 cases in Toronto’s Ward 5, York South—Weston.

The City of Toronto has released geographic information on where its residents with COVID-19 live, and the data indicate areas with higher portions of multi-unit residences and lower median household incomes have higher concentrations of reported cases than other neighbourhoods. This is reflected in several communities in York South—Weston.

Two of Toronto’s top three neighbourhoods with the highest numbers of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents are located in York South—Weston. The neighbourhood of Weston currently stands at 1,023 cases per 100,000 residents, while Beechborough-Greenbrook contains 958 cases per 100,000 residents.

I share the deep concerns of local residents and essential service providers about these numbers in our community. Our local service providers have been helping thousands of residents facing hardships due to this pandemic and they are in need of measures to protect themselves and our residents. This includes the need for more Personal Protective Equipment, as well as the local capacity to test residents for COVID-19 given that there are no testing centres in York South—Weston. Local residents have also been requesting access to reusable masks and your support to help provide these to the community would be appreciated.

I’d like to thank you for your ongoing leadership in the battle against this devastating pandemic and I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your consideration of this important matter.

Sincerely,

Councillor Frances Nunziata

Ward 5, York South—Weston
